I ran across an interesting little Windows tool that basically gives you quick access to commonly used Windows programs like Calculator, Calendar, Notepad, the Taskbar, Windows Explorer, and the Internet browser.
Stick for Windows is a small utility that provides access to these tools by attaching highly customizable tabs to the sides of your screen.
Here’s what the the screen looks like with a couple of tabs across the top of the screen:
Just click or hover over the tab and the tab will expand to the appropriate utility. The main tabs that you can add are the following:
Navigator Tab:
Note Tab:
Calculator Tab:
Calendar Tab:
To add a new tab, right-click on the glue icon in your taskbar and choose Tab Manager.
Now click on the Add Tab button and choose what kind of tab you would like to add. Then select the tab in the list box above and give your tab a different Title if you like. You can also choose whether you want it to Autohide (will collapse when you move your mouse away), Autoshow (will expand when you move your mouse over the tab), and Always on Top.
When working in the Navigator tab, you can either type in a local address, like C:\, or a website address, like google.com. You can perform all the normal explorer tasks, such as creating folders, deleting folders, moving and copying.
Also, you can setup hotkeys for each of the tabs, so you can access then quickly whenever you want.
Overall, the program is useful if you need to access notepad, calculator, or explorer while working in another program. Instead of having to go to Start and then Programs and then opening My Computer or going to Notepad, you can do it in one click or one keystroke.
My only issue with the program is that it’s kind of a pain to align the tabs with each other. You can right-click on the tab and pin it to one side of the screen, but the tabs will overlap each other unless you align then manually.
The program also works with dual monitors and allows you to pin the tabs to either monitor. You can also adjust the transparency, so that you can see the windows beneath the tabs. Enjoy!
