I’ve previously written about many programs that you can run right off your USB drive, such as EssentialPIM, CDBurnerXP, Portable Scribus, and i.Scribe. And if you wanted a whole slew of applications that you can access from your USB drive with a Start Menu interface, you can download PortableApps.
Even though PortableApps is an essential flash drive toolkit, there are still many utilities that I miss as an IT Administrator on my flash drive. Unless you are from the stone ages, you’ve probably used a program from SysInternals or NirSoft.
These include famously useful programs like Process Explorer and Process Monitor. NirSoft has so many useful utilities, it’s absolutely amazing. Everything from a super fast registry scanner to a program that shows passwords hidden by asterisks.
Wouldn’t it be cool if you could have all these utilities on your USB flash drive!? Well, now you can!
NirLauncher is a suite of most of the utilities from NirSoft combined into one nice package.
To use all these wonderful utilities from your flash drive, simple download the package and extract all the files into a new folder on your flash drive. Note that you do NOT want to extract the files to the root of the flash drive.
Now just run the NirLauncher.exe executable and you’re good to go! Also not that your anti-virus program may report false positives for some of the utilities. These programs are not viruses nor do they contain any spyware. You should add the programs to the safe list.
Once you run it, you can press F7 and F8 to move to the next and previous software group. If you want to configure the list of utilities to your needs, you can edit the .NLP file that is located in the package.
It’s a simple text file, so you can easily edit it. For instance, if there are utilities that you never use, simple remove then from the NLP file. Just make sure you keep all the paths relative so that it works from your USB stick.
If you want to add the entire Sysinternals suite to your flash drive and have it automatically loaded into the list with NirLauncher, you can download the package from the Sysinternals webpage and extract all the files to a new folder on the USB stick.
Next download the sysinternals.nlp files created by the author and save that into the same folder you created for all the Sysinternals utilities.
Now just drag this NLP file into the main window of the NirLauncher program or choose Add Software Package from the Launcher menu.
Now you can flip between the two packages by pressing the F3 and F4 keys. Overall, this is probably the best suite of tools for a USB flash drive. Enjoy!
