One major problem with disconnected IT teams is that it’s hard to manage a project when it spans across the entire country or the entire world! Even in my small business of 350 employees, we have IT personnel in four different cities.
Managing tasks, project deadlines, and collaborating together can sometimes be a real pain. That’s why it’s good to have an online project management and collaboration tool that everyone can access and easily use.
Taskbarn is a new online project management tool that is free and has a good number of features for small businesses or even for individuals with lots of projects to manage at once.
The cool thing about Taskbarn is that once you sign up, you get a private sub-domain for managing your project, i.e. myproject.taskbarn.com. You can then invite other team members to join your project site and start creating tasks, sharing files, sending private messages, and subscribing to RSS feeds.
What’s cool is that you can send an RSS feed to your boss or project manager and they will see all the updates in the feed, thereby eliminating the need to continually send project updates and status reports.
Here are some of the main features of Taskbarn:
- Quick access to projects from anywhere with an Internet connection, including mobile phones and smart phones
- Ability to share files, links, and other assets with team members
- Ability to communicate with all team members at once or through private messages
- Organize tasks into to-do lists
- Ability to update your Twitter status automatically
- Ability to add tasks and assign them to individual team members
- Up to 100 MB file storage space per project
- Developer API which allows you to build your own apps on top of taskbarn
Taskbarn has some unique features I haven’t seen in other online task and project management services like a developer API. If you can do some coding, you can basically create whatever application you want inside Taskbarn for your specific business needs.
Once you sign up, you create a new project by giving it a name, subdomain, and a summary:
After that, you will be brought to the main project page where you can add a new task, add a note, attach files, and more.
When you add a task, you can assign a priority, a due date, a detailed summary, assign it to a team member and setup a reminder also.

Overall, it’s a fairly basic project management tool, but it has most of the features a small business would need. You can also checkout HiTask, another free online task manager. Enjoy! [via LifeHacker]
