If you find your CD/DVD drive is being too loud when reading a disc that you can’t enjoy your soft Norah Jones music CD, then maybe your drive’s read speed needs to be slowed down.
If, on the other hand, you want your drive to access CD or DVD media as quickly as possible, tuning your read speed to the highest setting will help. In this tutorial we will talk about DriveSpeed from Nero that will let you control the read speed of your CD or DVD drive.
To start Nero DriveSpeed, open it it from the Nero toolkit group of programs if you have the Nero package installed or if not, get the individual software from the link above.
Step 1: choose the drive of the CD/DVD drive. If you have more than one drive, they will appear on the dropdown. Setting drive speeds are done per drive.
Step 2: Choose from predefined modes or set a custom read speed. The predefined modes are custom, silent and fast. Silent mode sets the drive speed to 2X while the fast mode is set to the maximum speed of the drive. The program automatically determines the maximum supportable speed of your drive so you wont have to guess.
Step 3: The spin down time is the amount of time that you need to wait for the settings to take effect. In the example above, the drive speed will take effect after 32 min of inactive drive use. I’m not sure why Nero implemented it this way. I think it should have been just an “apply” button which users can click to apply the settings real time.
Use the tips above to experiment with a read speed that suits your needs. If you need a quieter drive, use a slower speed. If you don’t care about the noise and want fast access to data from the discs, use the faster speed settings.
Also, you can use the speed settings to help read problematic discs, i.e. with scratches, etc. For example, if you can’t read the disc properly using fast settings, try the slower settings.
Ben shows you how it’s done.
