SpeedUpMyPC is a commercial product developed by Uniblue company, and is aimed at improving computer performance. As I wrote recently in a previous post, I am not a big fan of software marketing to skyrocket computer performance, because most of computer performance problems are the result of bad computer habits, and lack of maintenance.
Also, most software claiming to improve computer performance just manipulate built-in free tools already on the system. Read my previous post on how to clean up your computer ” Three Services on Your Computer you Should Disable to Speed it Up“
This week, my boss gave me a copy of SpeedUpMyPC software to run a test of it on my computer, because he had installed it on his system, but he was not seeing reasonable results. And ya know, you can’t say “no” to the boss, so here is what I found out.
Installing SpeedUpMyPC is very simple, once you download it and run it, is as easy as clicking the next button. You will need to enter the registration key at the middle of the installation. SpeedUpMyPC cost $ 29.95 plus taxes from the Uniblue web site.
As soon as you fire-up SpeedUpMyPC, it will start scanning your system to analyze its performance:
Once the scan finishes, it will calculate the optimization level of your PC, and it will give you the options to optimize the PC to the highest level.
When clicking on the Optimization tab, you can see some fancy graphs about Memory usage, CPU usage, Disk Usage, and Internet usage. Also in the optimization tab, is a startup option, where you can disable any startup program from running at your computer logon.
Clicking on the Clean UP tab, it gives you the option to to clean up junk files off your system like, Temporary Files, Lost Clusters, Junk Files, Back-up files etc. Also in this clean up tab, you have the option to remove files that compromise your privacy, shred important files, and remove unnecessary programs.
Clicking on the Settings tab, it give you three options to configure how the program behaves.
1. Start SpeedUpMyPC with Windows.
2. Show in the system tray when the application is minimized.
3. Start automatic scanning when application loads. the first two are by default, the last one, is optional. You should uncheck all of them.
The verdict about SpeedUpMyPC is that, it does not do anything out of the ordinary, besides the file shredder option, you can basically do all the things it does with built-in free windows tools. But if you don’t have the knowledge enough to use the built-in windows tools, then buy SpeedUpMyPC.
