Firefox provides a method for duplicating a tab and preserving its history. Simply press Ctrl and then click and drag a tab to another location on the tab bar.

However, there is an add-on for Firefox, called Duplicate This Tab, that allows you to the same thing with some added features.

Install Duplicate This Tab from

https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/156490/.

On the webpage for the Duplicate This Tab extension, click the Add to Firefox link.

To duplicate a tab, right-click on the tab and select Duplicate Tab from the popup menu. Select Duplicate Tab from the submenu that displays.

NOTE: The tab you want to duplicate does not have to be the active tab.

Duplicate tab menu options

You can duplicate a tab within the current window (Duplicate Tab option) or duplicate a tab and open it in a new window (Duplicate Tab To New Window option). If you duplicate a tab into a new window, the tab in the original window is not closed.

You can also move a tab to a new window using the Detach Tab option. The tab will be closed in the current window and opened in a new window.

If you have more than one Firefox window open, you can merge the tabs from all open windows into one window (Merge Windows option). We cover this feature in more detail later in this post.

There are many options available for customizing Duplicate This Tab. To access the options, select Add-ons from the Tools menu.

Selecting Add-ons from the Tools menu

Scroll down in the list of your add-ons on the Add-ons dialog box and select the Duplicate This Tab item. Click the Options button.

Also, use the Duplicating Tabs tab to specify how to open links in a duplicate tab and how to open a duplicate tab for the back and forward toolbar buttons.

To display the Advanced Options section of the Duplicating Tabs tab, click the plus button to the left of Advanced Options. These options allow you to specify what parts of the page should be cloned when creating a duplicate tab.

The Duplicate Tab extension allows you to merge multiple Firefox windows. Use the Merging Windows tab to specify the behavior when merging tabs into one window. Use the options in the Merge windows when no tabs are selected box to choose to merge all windows into one or merge only the current window with the Firefox window that last had focus. Specify whether you want to include popup windows.

When merging only selected tabs, use the options in the Merging after selecting tabs box specify whether to close the current window and all the non-selected tabs after merging the selected tabs into one window.

Duplicate Tab allows you to specify which options to display on the Duplicate Tab context menu. To activate and deactivate options on the menu, click the Context Menu tab on the Duplicate Tab Settings dialog box.

The first section allows you to specify which items are available on the context menu accessed by right-clicking on a tab. The second section, which is not selected by default, allows you to specify which items are available on the context menu accessed by right-clicking anywhere in the content of a webpage.
