If you’re paranoid about the security of your PC and especially your email, it might be a good idea to enable a secure HTTPS connection for Gmail. By default, when you log into Gmail, it uses HTTPS to send your password across the Internet in encrypted format.
However, after the initial login, all other data will be sent across the Internet in non-encrypted HTTP protocol. In this case, your Google account is more vulnerable to hijacking.
If you’re always connecting to Gmail from non-secure network like hotel wireless, airport wireless, coffee shops, etc, you want to make sure your connection to Gmail is encrypted at all times, not just for the login process.
You can enable HTTPS (Hypertext Transfer Protocol Secure) in Gmail by following the procedure below:
1. Sign into your Gmail account and click on the Settings link at the top right of the page:
2. Now scroll down to the bottom and find the section entitled Browser Connection. Change the setting to Always use https.
3. Now make sure to click the Save Changes button at the very bottom.
That’s it! Now you have increased the security of your Gmail account! Note that using a secure connection to Gmail for everything will slightly decrease the speed of the connection. However, the slight speed decrease is worth protecting the sensitive information that might be stored in your account.
Also, be sure to read my previous post on how to tell if your Gmail account has been hacked already.
