I recently ran into an issue on a client machine that was running Vista in which we were trying to manually download updates for Windows Vista from the Windows Update site online.
However, we ended up getting an error message saying the updates could not be installed and giving an error code of 0×80073712.
If you are having this issue, it means some Windows system files are corrupted or incorrect. This same problem also occurs if you notice that the “Windows Features” dialog box under Programs and Features when you click Turn Windows features on or off is empty.
Note that you must be logged in as an Administrator in order to perform any of the actions below.
Method 1 – System File Checker
The first way to try and fix this error is to run the system file checker tool, which is pretty easy to run, even for beginners. The System File Checker tool will basically scan all protected system files and replace any corrupted or incorrect versions with the correct Microsoft versions.
Step 1: You can run System File Checker by going to Start and typing CMD in the Start Search box.
Step 2: Make sure to click Run as Administrator. Now at the command prompt, type in sfc /scannow.
A dialog will appear that has a progress bar showing that Windows is verifying protected files.
Note that you may have to insert you original Windows Vista CD in order for the utility to run.
Once it has finished running, which can be a while, try to run Windows Update again or try to turn Windows features on or off to see if the problem is gone. If not, try method 2.
Method 2 – System Restore
The second option you have is to perform a system restore. To perform a system restore in Windows Vista, follow these steps:
Step 1: Click the Vista Start button and type in system restore in the Start Search box.
Step 2: Choose System Restore from the programs menu and follow the steps to restore to a previous restore point. Make sure to choose the Recommended restore option.
Now try again and see if Windows Update works. Your computer should hopefully be working again! If not, post a comment here and I’ll try to help. Enjoy!
