We predominantly use Firefox when surfing the web and we use many add-ons to enhance our browsing experience. Sometimes, when we upgrade to the next major version of Firefox, we find there are certain add-ons that become incompatible with the latest version and are disabled.
We like to have our selected homepage display when we open new tabs. However, there is no way to do this using the Open a new tab button or the New Tab option on the Firefox menu in Firefox 3, 4 or 5.
In Firefox 3 or 4, you can install the New Tab Homepage add-on, which is a very simple add-on that opens the homepage specified in the General Options on new tabs created using the Open a new tab button on the tab bar or the New Tab option on the Firefox menu. When we upgraded to Firefox 5, the New Tab Homepage add-on was disabled because it is not compatible. We had to find a new solution.
NOTE: If you don’t want to install an add-on to be able to open your homepage when you open a new tab, there is a workaround. You can either use the middle, or scroll, button on your mouse when clicking on the home button or press Ctrl when clicking the home button with the normal mouse button.
In steps the Tab Utilities add-on. It may seem like overkill if all you want to do is open your homepage on new tabs, but it has a lot of useful features. This article shows you just the feature that opens your homepage on new tabs, but we encourage you to explorer the many other features of the Tab Utilities add-on.
To install Tab Utilities in Firefox 5, click the Firefox button and select Add-ons from the menu.
Enter “tab utilities” (without the quotes) in the search box in the upper, right corner of the window. Press Enter or click the magnifying glass to start the search.
Find Tab Utilities (not the Lite version) in the list and click Install to the right of the description.
Once the add-on has been installed, Firefox must be restarted. Click the Restart now link.
When Firefox has restarted, click the Firefox button and select Options from the menu.
Click the Tabs button at the top of the Options dialog box. Click the Tab Utilities Options button that has been added to the Tabs screen.
The Tab Utilities Options dialog box displays. Make sure the Tabs screen displays (if not, click the Tabs button at the top) and the Tab Opening tab is active. Select Home Page from the Load in new tab drop-down list towards the bottom of the dialog box.
Click OK to close the Tab Utilities Options dialog box.
You are returned to the Options dialog box. Click OK to close it.
Now, when you open a new tab, the URL you specified on the General screen on the Options dialog box is opened in the new tab.
There are all kinds of useful tools in the Tab Utilities add-on, such as making the tab bar display in multiple rows (using the Tab Bar tab on the Appearance screen), adding commands to the tab context menu that allow you to faviconize, freeze, protect, and lock tabs and even to select one or more tabs (using the Menus tab on the Appearance screen). Explore the options and take full advantage of the tabs in Firefox.
