If you like having tabs in your file manager, you might like PCMan File Manager in the Gnome environment in Ubuntu.
Installing PCMan File Manager
To install PCMan File Manager in Gnome, select Ubuntu Software Center from the Applications menu.
The Ubuntu Software Center dialog box displays. In the search box in the upper, right corner of the dialog box, enter ‘PCMan’ and press Enter. You will notice that as you type, Ubuntu is matching the characters you type to the available software applications and creating a list for you.
Click the right arrow on the PCMan File Manager item in the list. The PCMan File Manager screen displays in the right pane of the Ubuntu Software Center.
Scroll down to the bottom of the page, and click Install. A dialog box displays requiring you to enter your user password to authenticate the action.
Enter your user password and click Authenticate. The installation starts with the downloading of the software.
Once the installation is finished, you can find it under Applications | System Tools | PCMan File Manager.
To add a new tab in PCMan File Manager, select New Tab from the File menu.
You can then navigate to a separate folder on the new tab.
The built-in file manager, Dolphin, has tabbing capability, but the program itself doesn’t seem as easy to use. PCMan File Manager is simple to use and seems to operate quicker than Dolphin.
