Finally I followed zwr's recommendation and Advanced Outlook Recovery proved a great tool in recovering corrupted .pst files.

The free download is great but a lot of problems occurred. After wasting many days and many brain cells, I FINALLY broke down and bought the "Advanced Outlook Repair" tool (at the tune of $249.95!!!!) - and it WORKED perfectly!!!!
It restored all of my files, contacts, history, calendars, sharepoint lists, BCM, archives, and even my backups BEAUTIFULLY - just as if nothing ever happened! I opened Outlook (2007) and it was all just there, like before the reformat of Vista.... :-)
I would recommend the tool to anyone, as a last resort, because it is expensive, but it works!

I had to reformat my hard drive and when I did… my outlook files backed up into a zillion zip files… that when unzipped, were not the correct .pst files, no matter how many times I fixed and repaired the files, ran the "scanpst.exe" file… the file wouldn't open and restore to Outlook. Most of the time, it is the iTunes plug in but there are other plug-ins that can cause problems too. I have disabled all of the plug-ins except for my anti-virus and everything has worked perfectly for 2 weeks now. All you have to do is go to tools, then trust center, and then add-ins, and then manage add-ins. Disable all of them except for your anti-virus and you should be set after that.

I have done all of the above for the past 6 months and finally came across a website that said that the problem was the add-ins in the trust center.
