Once you go online and connect to the Internet, it’s very important to protect your system from attacks. Unprotected systems are open to data loss, theft, and intrusion and can threaten the integrity of the PC. A firewalls job is to protect the system and to disable potentially harmful incoming traffic.
Comodo Firewall, now officially part of the Comodo Security package, is a freeware that you can use to replace Window’s basic built-in firewall. You can download either 32bit or 64 bit versions of the software installer: http://personalfirewall.comodo.com/download_firewall.html
The installer file is 72.2MB so it could take a while for non-broadband users to download. If you are using a dial-up account or a slow connection, to avoid disconnected downloads, use Getright to download large files.
The software has an easy to use interface with categorized settings so even novice PC users could easily pick it up.
Another firewall software that I use is InfoExpress’s CyberArmor Personal Firewall which I found best for advanced enterprise use. With CyberArmor admin, you can update client configurations automatically and it easily integrates with third party VPN software like Cisco’s VPN client.
You can read about CyberArmor on their homepage at http://www.infoexpress.com
If you are putting up a LAN that connects to the Internet, installing a good firewall is a must have requirement. Choose what’s easy to administer and scale. Those two options above are a good choice, but do your research and see what product suits your needs.
Ben Carigtan shows you how it’s done.
