I used to think that a person could learn everything about life just by experience, or by listening to other people’s life experiences. But there was a point in my life during my teen years, that I wanted to improve myself as a person, as well as a professional. I was working for Wells Fargo bank as a merchant teller at that time. And I noticed that my co-workers, who happened to be the same age as me, had a very sophisticated vocabulary when talking to customers. As a result, returning customers would always ask for this employees in order to get help with their banking problems. I wasn’t jealous of them, and I can’t deny that I felt left out in many occasions.
At this point my schooling time (high school to be more specific) was just a past-time, a hobbie. High school, was just the place where to have fun, play soccer, get to know girls, etc. But studying, unfortunately, was not a priority.
But one day, a teacher name Mrs. Izumi, notice that i had problems with spelling, even in simple words like “WORLD”, I would spell it “WORL”, so, it was a complete disaster. I know that many of you might think that in high school, you are not supposed to be a master on anything. Well, that’s wrong my friends ! ’cause when I went to college, I had to start with the ESL class (ENGLISH AS A SECOND LANGUAGE) I remember when Mrs. Izumi gave me one of the best advices one can give to anybody! she told me: “YOU HAVE TO START READING”
I took it so seriously, that my grammar, spelling, verbal vocabulary, improved so much, that I end up tutoring other college students with their vocabulary/grammar struggles.
so, here is a list (base in my experience of course) of some benefits you get when you read:
1. You develop the mind ability to read anything (you don’t have phobia of medicine books or math books)
2. You learn how to follow instructions
3. You get to improve your reading, spelling, and speaking vocabulary
4. Your communication skills through writing , becomes more efficient.
5. Many of your curiosities are satisfied. You can find many answers about life, just by reading a book. Like the bible.
6. You can write a book about anything now! after all you have the skills, don’t you!
