Scanning through IT articles today I stumbled upon this well written and provoking article at pbs.org/cringely. Robert, the author of the article goes on describing the type of IT consultants that exist today, and their roles on IT Projects. Quoting his article the 3 types of consultants are:
1.Consultants are hired to do a specific thing — set up an email system, design and install a network, put in a POS system, etc. Usually the customer knows what they want before they find the consultant gets hired.
2.Consultants supposed to help IT think out of THEIR box, developing and improving business or IT vision, etc.
3.Consultants brought in as contractors to help implement a given project
To Mr. Cringely list I would add a fourth type of consultants which are:
4. Consultants brought in to tell managers what employees already know. These manages are often out of touch so they don’t know whom to believe or listen, so they bring a bunch of consultants to hear what employees have been saying for years.
This article is a well worth 5 minutes reading. It touches one of the biggest crisis in the IT industry these days.
