Ubuntu is one of the most famous Linux distributions. Dell is even shipping Ubuntu operating system pre-installed on their desktop computers and notebooks in Europe for people that prefer so. Ubuntu is free, secure and easy to use, you only need to get your hands on it to discover its potential.
In this post I will show you how to install Ubuntu 8.04 on your computer as a virtual machine using Microsoft Virtual PC 2007. Is a great way to get familiar with the OS without blowing away your Windows XP or vista installation, or doing a dual boot.
Downloading Microsoft Virtual PC.
The first thing you need to do is to download Microsoft Virtual PC 2007 SP1 from Microsoft download center here scroll to the very bottom and choose 32 BIT\setup.exe, unless you are using a 64-bit operating system client, choose 64 BIT\setup.exe.
Installing Microsoft Virtual PC is as simple as clicking the next button.
Downloading Ubuntu 8.04
Once Virtual PC is installed, download the Ubuntu image CD from here. Choose the release Ubuntu 8.04 LTS Desktop Edition – Supported to 2011 and the Standard personal computer (x86 architecture, PentiumTM, CeleronTM, AthlonTM, SempronTM) again, unless you are using a 64-bit operating system, choose the other option.
Creating the virtual Machine on Microsoft Virtual PC
Once Ubuntu have been downloaded, open Microsoft Virtual PC. The new virtual PC machine wizard will come up. Click next. On the next window, choose the first option Create a virtual machine. Click next. On the next screen, choose the name of the virtual machine, name it, Ubuntu 8.04 and click Next. On the next window, you will need to choose the operating system. Choose other:
Click Next. On the next window, you will need to allocate how much memory you want to use on your virtual machine. click on Adjusting the RAM and allocate 255 MB for the virtual machine.
Click Next. on the next window, you will need to choose from an Existing virtual hard disk, or choose a new virtual hard disk, choose the last option, New virtual hard disk and click Next. On the next window, you will need to choose how much physical hard drive space on your “host machine” you want to allocate for your virtual machine.
Allocate 10 GB (10240 MB) for your virtual hard disk size. Leave the default location for your virtual machine, and click Next. on the next Window click Finish.
Installing Ubuntu 8.04 on the virtual machine
Once the virtual machine had been created, it should show up on your Virtual PC Console:
Select the Ubuntu 8.04 virtual machine and click on the Start button. A black Window with DHCP trying connect to a network shared installation should come up. go to CD and choose Capture ISO Image. Choose the path to the Ubuntu ISO image we downloaded earlier, select it, and click Open. The Ubuntu Language settings should come up:
Choose English by Default and hit Enter. Unless you want your Ubuntu installation on a different language, choose it from here, and hit Enter.
Next, you have 5 options:
- Try Ubuntu without any change to your computer ““ this option is good when you are running Ubuntu from a live CD.
- Install Ubuntu ““ physical installation of Ubuntu on the physical hard disk
- Check for CD Defects ““ check if anything is wrong on the installation CD
- Test Memory ““ self explanatory, it checks the memory for any problem.
- Boot from first hand hard disk.
Here I encountered an error when selecting the Install Ubuntu option:
An unrecoverable processor error has been encountered.
The virtual machine will reset now.
I think, this problem happened because we are installing Ubuntu from the ISO image on our physical hard drive.
Here is the way around this problem. when you get to the option to unstall Ubuntu, press F4 and choose Safe graphics mode. then choose the first option on the menu:Try Ubuntu without any change to your computer.
If you still get the same problem do this:
At the prompt, press F4 and select “Safe graphics mode“.
then press F6.
Modify the following boot line:
“Boot Options seed/ubuntu.seed boot=casper initrd=/casper/initrd.gz quiet splash –” Delete the part that says “quiet splash ““ -” and replace it with “vga=791 noreplace-paravirt”
That will make Ubuntu boot onto the GUI. After logging into Ubuntu Interface you should be able to see an installation folder on the desktop:
Click on the Install folder. The installation wizard should come up:
Select the language and click Forward. Next Choose your location:
Choose your city, and click Forward. Don’t worry if the time zone is not OK, you can change that later when you login to Ubuntu.
Next, you will need to choose your Keyboard layout, if you are in the US, mostly all your options will be the default. If you are not in the US, choose your settings accordingly. Click Forward.
Next, you will need to prepare the disk space, remember that we chose to use 10 GB of hard disk space for this virtual machine, so select the default option, Guided ““ use the entire disk.
Click Forward. Next, you will have fill out, your name, your username, password, and Computer name”:
After you have entered the info, click on Forward. Next, you will get a summary of the installation. Click Install to begin the installation:
The installation should start.
After 20 ““ 30 minutes, the installation will finished, and will ask you if you want to reboot. At this stage Ubuntu is installed on your computer permanently.
Click on Restart now. Now Ubuntu should be installed and ready to be used on your virtual PC. If you have any problem, or question, please use the comments section below.

Dear Sir/Madam,

iam facing problem in Windows Vista
i'm also having a problem like Kenny Guillani. Please sir how to solve this problem?
Rafie, have you read the link for the post I recommended to Kenny? I think I explained how to fix the problem there quite well.
Thanks a lot, you're solution to the processor error works like a charm.
My scenario: Virtual Server 2005 R2, booting from CD, no error message displayed, after "Try" or "Install", the virtual machine reboots with no messages. Doing the trick:
vga=791 noreplace-paravirt
works fine. Thank you.
Nooo!!!!
i replaced the thinks you said in the boot options but i have the same error!!! An unrecoverable processor error….. I'm running VCP in Windows Vista and i want to install Ubuntu 8.0
Please help me!
Hi mate………
well done…thanks a lot for u r help…….
Thank you man.
This is the only one I found in Google works for me.
This is one of the best solution I found to install Ubuntu on MS Virtual PC. With this I got the same error after installing even but I did change something in my VPC setting that helped me to install and use Ubuntu on MS VPC.
If we setup the Hard Disk as Expandable, you will have a problem. Set the HD as a fixed (make sure to have over 3.5GB space) and then run the Virtual Disk Setup to create the proper HD and then try these steps. This allowed me to install and use Ubuntu on MS VPC.
thx for the help. i was getting the error but now it works great!
Wonderful. Thanks a lot ;D
It works..!! good job..!!! thx
Working great. Thanks.
"usb=false noreplace-paravirt" options helps to install ubuntu directly. without live mode. same options helps after reboot.
''vga=791 noreplace-paravirt'' working prefect i get no more errors installing on Vista i just set the RAM to 512 for faster install
thanks alot
i get error at 62% installing ubuntu 8.04 ( failed to copy files; faulty cd/dvd or hard disc ) I'm using ISO image , my pc is running vista

Hi!I succeded to install ubuntu but without the modification "vga=791 noreplace-paravirt"…My problem is that i have no sound…
The OS of the main computer is XP .Maybe i have to find some drivers for my sound card..i'll check…
Thanks!!
Hey thanks a lot for your guidance. I succeeded to install Ubuntu with the modification “vga=791 noreplace-paravirt-” but my problem is after doing this the Virtual PC screen goes blank and it says No Virtual PC addons are installed. So when i installed addon from Action Menu. but still the screen was still blank. So, I went to the link "http://helpdeskgeek.com/index.php/error-when-booting-ubuntu-in-virtual-pc-the-first-time" and replace "quite splash" with "noreplace-paravirt–" so booting started but now it stopped at a line saying [ 49.698489] checking if image is initramfs…
Please help me out. I really desperate to use Ubuntu Linux on Virtual PC 2007
It works great for me. Thanks!
I have tried to install Ubuntu on windows virtual pc 2007 SP1. But when I select the iso image I get the message "reboot and select proper boot device". This message does not go away and my cpu goes to 100%. Can anyone tell me what i do wrong?
Thanks,

I get this weird error..
When trying any of the 5 options at the ubuntu menu screen part after picking language,
I get a bunch of code I dont understand alll preceded by 0.148009]
the last one ending with —[ end trace 4eaa2a86a8e2da22 ]—
…what did i do wrong?
Well, not quite. After installing and rebooting more of the same. The boot goes nowhere. You must do more of this paravirts in the boot options and make them permanent. See
http://arcanecode.wordpress.com/2008/11/10/instal…
for details. That works for me.
I did the whole installation process (you were very helpful), but when i clicked "restart now", the window closed and the Ubuntu screen was frozen for ten minutes, and i couldn't move the mouse. I finally got fed up and closed it and re-opened it, but it opened like the first time i opened it. any way to fix this?
Thanks for the tip. I had to upgrade to Virtual PC 2007 SP1 to install Ubuntu 9.04(If you get a blank screen for long time after changing the boot option, try upgrading to SP1) but it worked.
Cheers,
Himanshu
What about Virtual Machine Additions? Is there any VMA for Ubuntu?
This article helped to install it, but when the installed Ubuntu starts in VPC I have the same error. So the best way is download VMWare player, uninstall VPC and open VPC image in VMWP :))
