If you have noticed that your Windows 7 system has become sluggish and slow to respond, you may have tried defragging your hard drive to fix it. If this doesn’t help, the problem could be a slow performing index.
Indexing the files on your computer enables Windows to perform very fast searches in the locations where the files have been indexed. For more information about Windows 7’s search indexing feature, see our previous post, Windows 7 File Search Indexing Options.
To rebuild your index and improve the performance of Windows 7, open the Start menu and enter “indexing options” (without the quotes) into the search box. The results displays as you type.
On the Indexing Options dialog box, click the Advanced button.
The Advanced Options dialog box displays. On the Index Settings tab, in the Troubleshooting section, click the Rebuild button.
A dialog box displays warning you that rebuilding the index could take a long time and that any search results may be incomplete until it is done. Click OK to continue.
The progress of the rebuilding of the index displays at the top of the Indexing Options dialog box.
When the rebuild of the index is complete, a message displays at the top of the Indexing Options dialog box.
Click Close to close the Indexing Options dialog box.
NOTE: The speed of the rebuilding of the index is reduced if you continue to use your computer while the rebuilding is happening. If you want the indexing to complete faster, take a break from using your computer until it is done.
