If you’re in IT, you’ve probably installed Windows 7 as a new OS on top of your existing OS – most likely running in a multi-boot environment. During startup, the system will prompt you for which operating system to boot from, which for me is quite a drag as I always want to have the OS booted right away without any prompts.
If you want to enable Windows 7 as the default boot up OS in a multi-boot envrionment, follow the instructions that I will show below. First the tweak will need an administrative account – use the administrator or any equivalent account that you setup during installation.
Right click on the My Computer icon then choose Properties. The system window will appear. Click the Advanced System Settings to open the System Properties.
Click the Advanced tab:
Click the Settings button under the Startup and Recovery panel:
Uncheck the box next to “Time to display list of operating systems”. Make sure to choose Windows 7 as your default OS.
Finally, click OK to save your changes. Restart your computer and you should see the boot manager disappear. This should significantly speed up your Windows 7 boot time since you removed have the part where it will wait for a user command.
If you don’t want to totally remove the prompt during boot up, you might want to just limit the waiting time from 30 seconds to say 5 seconds or less:
