In Windows 7, just like every other version of Windows, system files are hidden by default. This is true whether you are an Administrator or a regular user. For most users, this is fine, but for advanced users, it is sometimes necessary to access system files.
For example, if you were to go into C:\Windows, you would see more folders and files if you turned on Show Hidden Files. In this article, I will walk you through the steps to view hidden files on Windows 7 and Vista.
First, open My Computer from the desktop and click on Tools from the menu. Then click on Folder Options.
Now click on the View tab and scroll down until you see Hidden files and folders. Select the Show hidden files, folders and drives radio box.
Click OK and then OK again to close out all windows. Now when you browse through directories, you will see any hidden folder or files in a lighter more transparent color. This means they are hidden, but can be accessed.
As you can see from above, the MSOCache, OEM, and ProgramData folders are all hidden. The little yellow lock on the MSOCache folder means that only Administrators and the System accounts have access to this folder.
Note that even if you get into one of the hidden folders, all the files and folders may still be protected by the TrustedInstaller in Windows 7. This is a new way to make sure that system files do not get deleted or modified.
If you get an error stating you do not have permission to delete files or need authorization from TrustedInstaller, read my previous post on how to delete files protected by TrustedInstaller. Enjoy!

Very useful! It’s hard finding those pesky hidden files!
