Right after the Installation of Windows Vista, the setup does a final test of your computer’s performance; this process usually takes about 30 seconds to a few minutes depending on your computer speed.
The first things to do after you land on your windows vista desktop for the first time is;
If your PC includes a network card (wireless or regular one) that was properly detected and installed during the setup, you will be asked to configure that network connection. When you click the prompt, you will see a window similar to the image below will show up;
From here you can choose whether the network you are accessing is a private (your home wireless access) work or public, windows will configure networking differently in each case.
Next thing is to check if all the drivers have been successfully installed during the setup, ideally all the drivers should have been installed during the installation, but let’s check to make sure, to do that, go to Start Menu>Right Click Computer and choose Manage this makes the computer management console to come up, on the tree window to the left click on Device Manager,

If any of the entries, or nodes, in the device manager tree views is open displaying a device with a small yellow exclamation point, then you will need to install some drivers manually. There are four ways to install drivers in windows vista;
Automatically: right click the unsupported device and choose Update Drivers Software, windows will search the local system, including any setup disk for the driver.
Manually: as before you right click the unsupported device, and choose update Driver Software, with this option you need to provide the setup with a location or a disk.
As an executable setup disk or download: many drivers come in self-contained executables where you run the setup just like you do on any application program.
With Windows updates: this is the best way to install drivers, and is the first one I try when I see some drivers didn’t get installed on the setup
To find Drivers on Windows Update, open the Start Menu and choose All Programs>Windows Updates, then click the check for updates link in the upper-right corner of the windows updates application. In Windows Vista, windows can update your operating system, hardware drivers, and many Microsoft applications.
After doing all the updates, its time to install all your applications, install them one at a time and reboot the computer when necessary, this process sometimes take a long time, but you should be able to find some comfort thinking that you only need to do it once. With all your applications installed, you should restore any data that you might have backed up from your previous windows install. Or if you used the Easy Transfer Tool to migrate your data from your old computer to this brand new one, now is a good time to do the transfer.
