- How to fix “Cannot renew IP address” in Windows
Posted on Wednesday, November 5th, 2008 in Networking - Views: (199)Recently, I was working on a clients machine and after logging in realized that for some reason I was not able to connect to the server. I went to the command prompt and type in IPCONFIG and pressed Enter. The IP address for the computer was 169.254.x.x and the subnet mask was 255.255.255.0. The 169.254 address is an APIPA (Automatic Private IP Addressing) address that is assigned when no DHCP server is available or reachable.
- How to fix “Resource file C_PsdRsDll not found!” error
Posted on Saturday, November 1st, 2008 in How-To - Views: (166)As an IT support specialist, I love dealing with obscure Windows errors that sound absolutely ridiculous and make little to no sense. The great thing is most of the time you really don’t have to know what the exact problem is in order to fix the problem.Take, for example, the following strange error that I recently saw:Resource file <C_PsdRsDll> not found!

- How to run a System State backup in Windows Server 2008 Server Core
Posted on Monday, November 3rd, 2008 in Windows Server 2008 - Views: (152)I’ve been playing around with Windows Server 2008 Server Core and it’s definitely very different than working with the Standard version of Windows Server 2008. Server Core is a stripped down version of Windows Server 2008 in which only specific server roles are installed in order to reduce the management and maintenance needs significantly. It also reduces the attack surface area since the server runs with the minimal services required to support the main server roles.
- Fix “Host Process Rundll32 has stopped working”
Posted on Sunday, November 9th, 2008 in How-To - Views: (151)Here’s another problem that I recently ran into on a client machine running Windows Vista:Host Process Rundll32 has stopped workingThis message kept popping up whenever we tried to open the Windows Security Center. It would pop up 10 times and then disappear. Nothing bad would happen to the system like blue screen or crashing, but it was just annoying.I’ve also seen this Host Process rundll32 error pop up when trying to open other programs, so it doesn’t seem to be associated with one particular program, which makes it all the harder to solve.
- Cannot delete print job in Windows XP and Vista
Posted on Wednesday, November 12th, 2008 in Networking - Views: (143)Have you ever run into the situation where you sent a job to the printer, but it just refused to print? You check the print job queue and everything looks fine, but nothing is happening? So either nothing happens or the print job ends up failing and USUALLY just goes away. If not, you then have to go into the print job queue and manually delete the print job, otherwise it will hold up all the new jobs coming to the printer.
- How to install and setup Windows 2008 Server Core
Posted on Thursday, November 6th, 2008 in Windows Server 2008 - Views: (137)A Windows 2008 Server Core installation can be a bit tricky if you are not used to using the command line. There are a few things to remember before installing Windows Server Core onto a computer: You cannot upgrade a previous version of Windows Server, such as 2003, to Server Core installation. You must perform a clean install. You cannot upgrade a Server Core installation to the full version of Windows Server 2008.
- Why most companies should wait for Windows 7 before upgrading
Posted on Sunday, November 2nd, 2008 in Product Reviews - Views: (132)If you work at a company that still runs Windows XP instead of Windows Vista, there is a BIG reason! Mostly because Vista sucks for most businesses. There are simply too many hardware and software compatibility issues plus annoying system changes like User Account Control, etc.So what to do? Wait it out! Our company is simply going to wait till 2009 when Microsoft releases (hopefully) Windows 7, which has actually gotten some very good reviews!
- How to install a server role on a Server Core installation
Posted on Friday, November 7th, 2008 in Windows Server 2008 - Views: (130)Yesterday I wrote a post on how to install and configure a new Server Core installation using the command prompt. In that article, I talked about setting an Administrator password, activating Server Core, renaming the computer, joining a Server Core machine to a domain, and turning on the firewall. Now that you have done that, you probably want to start installing server roles, right?
