Windows 7 and Windows Vista have a nice feature that allows you to access some extra options on the context menu for any folder. Press Shift while right-clicking on a folder in Windows Explorer.
You will notice an option called Open command window here. This will open a command prompt window that is set to the current folder selected in Windows Explorer.
Unfortunately, this feature is not available in previous versions of Windows, such as XP and 2000. However, there is a way to add this feature to these versions of Windows.
Right-click on your desktop and select New | Text Document from the pop-up menu. Name the file Command.reg.
Windows warns you that you are changing the file extension. Click Yes to change it.
Right-click on the file and select Open With from the pop-up menu.
The Open With dialog box displays. Scroll down to the Notepad option and click on it. Click OK.
The empty file opens in Notepad. Enter the following lines exactly as listed into the file and save it. Close Notepad.
Double-click on the file on the desktop. When you are asked to confirm the addition to the registry, click Yes.
Another dialog box displays telling you the operation was successful.
Now when you right-click on a folder in Windows Explorer the Open Command Line Here option is available and will open a Command Prompt window set to the selected folder.
A very useful tip if you work on the command line a lot in any version of Windows.
