Solving Problems with Your Computer Power Supply

One of the common problems I find on computers these days is the phenomenon of computers shutting down by themselves, if you happen to be doing something on your computer and suddenly goes blank magically rebooting without you doing anything, most likely is the power supply not able to support the enough juice to your system to do whatever you are doing on your computer, this most happens when you are using big applications like, Photoshop or playing some games.

One of the things I do to make sure the power supply is the root of the problem; I open the computer case and set the new power supply on top of the old one. I disconnect the old power supply’s cords and plug the PC devices into the new power supply. I turn on the PC and run the computer as I did when it rebooted by itself, and if this time does not shutdown I assume it was the power supply and then I properly install the new power supply.

Follow this procedure to install the power supply;

Turn off the computer

Remove all external cables from the power supply connections

Remove the case cover

Disconnect all power cords from the power supply to other devices

Determine which components must be removed before the power supply can be safely removed from the case. You might need to remove the hard drive, several cards or the CD ROM drives. In some cases you will need to even remove the motherboard.

Remove all the components necessary to get the power supply. Remember to protect the components from static electricity as you work.

Unscrew the screws on the back of the computer case that hold the power supply to the case.

Look on the bottom of back of the case for slots that are holding the power supply in position. Often the power supply must be shifted in one direction to free it from the slots

Remove the power supply

Place the new power supply into position, sliding it into the slots used by the old power supply.

Replace the power supply screws

Replace all other components

Before replacing the case cover, connect the power cords, turn in the PC, and verify that it is all working.

Turn on off the PC and replace the cover.
