How to Enable Microphone, Line In, and Stereo Mix in Windows 11 and 10

“Microphone”, “Line In”, or “Stereo Mix” may be missing from Windows’ recording devices when you’re trying to capture voice, cassette audio, or PC sound. Windows often hides disabled inputs, and some audio drivers don’t provide every recording option.

Fix #1: Open the Recording tab

The classic Sound dialog contains the controls for enabling recording devices.

  1. In Windows 11, right-click the speaker icon on the taskbar and select Sound settings.
  2. Scroll to Advanced and select More sound settings.
  3. In Windows 10, right-click the speaker icon and select Open Sound settings.
  4. Select Sound Control Panel under Related Settings.
  5. Open the Recording tab.

You should see every recording device currently exposed by the installed audio driver.

You can also press Windows + R, enter mmsys.cpl, and press Enter. This opens the same Sound dialog in Windows 11 and Windows 10.

Fix #2: Show and enable your microphone

Windows may list a built-in or USB microphone as disabled, especially after a driver change.

  1. Right-click an empty area inside the Recording tab.
  2. Enable Show Disabled Devices.
  3. Enable Show Disconnected Devices.
  4. Right-click your microphone and select Enable if that option appears.
  5. Right-click the microphone again and select Set as Default Device.
  6. Select Set as Default Communication Device if you’ll use it for calls.
  7. Speak into the microphone and watch the level meter beside its name.

The green bars should move while you speak. If they do, Windows is receiving a signal from the microphone.

Fix #3: Listen to the microphone through another device

The Listen option sends microphone audio to your headphones or speakers. It’s useful for testing, voice monitoring, and a makeshift karaoke setup.

  1. Double-click the microphone in the Recording tab.
  2. Open the Listen tab.
  3. Check Listen to this device.
  4. Open Playback through this device.
  5. Select the headphones or speakers you want to use.
  6. Click Apply.

You should hear the microphone through the selected output. Use headphones during this test because speakers can feed sound back into the microphone and cause a loud echo.

Uncheck Listen to this device when you’re finished if you don’t need live monitoring.

Fix #4: Adjust the input level and recording format

A microphone or line input that sounds quiet, distorted, or choppy usually needs a level or format adjustment.

  1. Double-click the recording device.
  2. Open the Levels tab.
  3. Make sure the device isn’t muted.
  4. Move the level slider while testing your voice or audio source.

  1. Open the Advanced tab.
  2. Select a common format such as 16 bit, 44100 Hz or 16 bit, 48000 Hz.
  3. Click Apply.
  4. Clear Allow applications to take exclusive control of this device if one app keeps blocking the input.
  5. Click OK.

Record a short test. Raise the level if the waveform is tiny, or lower it if the recording crackles during louder sections.

Fix #5: Configure the microphone for speech recognition

Windows includes a microphone setup process for voice control and dictation.

  1. Select the microphone on the Recording tab.
  2. Click Configure.
  3. Select Set up microphone.
  4. Choose the microphone type that matches your hardware.
  5. Read the displayed sentence at your normal speaking volume.
  6. Complete the setup when Windows confirms the microphone position and level.

The setup should finish without reporting that it couldn’t hear you. Dictation software may still have its own input selector, so choose the same microphone inside that app.

Fix #6: Enable Line In for cassette decks and other analog sources

Use Line In for a cassette deck, mixer, or another device that outputs an analog stereo signal. A desktop PC may have a dedicated blue line-in jack, while a laptop may require a USB audio adapter.

  1. Connect the source to the computer with a suitable 3.5 mm audio cable.
  2. Open the Recording tab in the Sound dialog.
  3. Right-click the device list and enable Show Disabled Devices.
  4. Right-click Line In or Line-In and select Enable.
  5. Select Set as Default Device if your recording app uses the Windows default input.
  6. Open Properties and adjust the Levels setting.
  7. Play audio from the connected source.

The meter beside Line In should move. Select Line In manually inside your recording software if the app ignores the Windows default.

A cassette deck’s line-out connection is the preferred source. If you’re using its headphone output, start at a low volume and raise it gradually to prevent distortion.

Fix #7: Enable Stereo Mix

Stereo Mix records sound playing through your computer. Depending on the audio hardware, it may appear as Wave Out, What U Hear, or another vendor-specific loopback input.

  1. Open the Recording tab.
  2. Right-click an empty part of the device list.
  3. Enable Show Disabled Devices.
  4. Enable Show Disconnected Devices.
  5. Right-click Stereo Mix and select Enable.
  6. Select Set as Default Device if you want compatible apps to use it automatically.
  7. Double-click Stereo Mix and open the Levels tab.
  8. Confirm that the device isn’t muted and its level isn’t set to zero.

Play a video or music track. The meter beside Stereo Mix should move with the PC’s audio.

Only record material you have permission to capture. Streaming services and copyrighted recordings may restrict copying or reuse.

Fix #8: Select the correct input inside your recording app

Changing the Windows default doesn’t force every app to use it. Conferencing tools, games, and audio editors often maintain separate device settings.

  1. Open the app’s audio or recording settings.
  2. Find its microphone or input selector; the label and placement vary by app.
  3. Select Microphone, Line In, or Stereo Mix.
  4. Start the app’s input test or make a short recording.
  5. Confirm that its meter responds to the intended source.

The app should now capture the selected input rather than another microphone or a silent device.

Fix #9: Allow apps to access recording devices

Windows privacy controls can block microphones and other inputs even when they work in the Sound dialog.

  1. In Windows 11, open Settings > Privacy & security > Microphone.
  2. Turn on Microphone access.
  3. Turn on Let apps access your microphone.
  4. Turn on access for the required Microsoft Store app.
  5. Enable desktop app access if you’re using a traditional desktop program.
  6. In Windows 10, open Settings > Privacy > Microphone and enable the corresponding access controls.

Return to the app and test the input again. Its level meter should now respond.

Fix #10: Record PC audio without Stereo Mix

If Stereo Mix doesn’t appear after showing disabled devices, the installed driver probably doesn’t expose a hardware loopback input. Recording software that supports Windows WASAPI can capture a playback device directly.

  1. Open your recording software’s audio device settings.
  2. Select Windows WASAPI as the audio host if the app provides that option.
  3. Choose the loopback version of your active speakers or headphones.
  4. Start playing PC audio.
  5. Record a short sample.

The recording should contain the sound sent to that playback device. Some screen-recording apps also have a system audio option that handles this without Stereo Mix.

For routing sound between several apps, virtual audio cable software creates a virtual output and a matching recording input. This addresses the missing Stereo Mix problem without replacing the physical audio hardware.

Fix #11: Correct Stereo Mix when it records silence

Stereo Mix is normally tied to a particular playback endpoint. It may record nothing when Windows sends audio to HDMI, a Bluetooth headset, or another output.

  1. Open Settings > System > Sound.
  2. Note the playback device currently selected under Output.
  3. Play audio and confirm that it comes from that device.
  4. Open the Recording tab in the classic Sound dialog.
  5. Double-click Stereo Mix.
  6. Raise its level on the Levels tab.
  7. Select Stereo Mix inside the recording app.
  8. Record another test.

The Stereo Mix meter and the recording app’s meter should both move. If only the app’s meter stays still, its input selection is wrong.

Fix #12: Send sound to two outputs with Stereo Mix

Windows normally sends an app’s audio to one default playback device. Stereo Mix can copy that signal to a second output.

  1. Set the first device as your Windows output under Settings > System > Sound.
  2. Open Stereo Mix Properties from the Recording tab.
  3. Open the Listen tab.
  4. Check Listen to this device.
  5. Choose the second output under Playback through this device.
  6. Click Apply.

Audio should play through the default output and the selected second device. The copied output may have a slight delay, so this setup works better for casual listening than synchronized speakers.

Fix #13: Install a driver that provides Stereo Mix

I’d skip this step unless Stereo Mix is completely absent. Installing an unsuitable audio driver can remove device controls or stop the sound output.

  1. Identify your PC or motherboard model.
  2. Download its Windows 11 or Windows 10 audio driver from the manufacturer’s support page.
  3. Open Device Manager.
  4. Expand Sound, video and game controllers.
  5. Double-click the computer’s audio device.
  6. Open the Driver tab.
  7. Install the manufacturer’s driver package.
  8. Restart Windows.
  9. Reopen the Recording tab and enable Show Disabled Devices.

Stereo Mix should appear if that driver and audio chipset support it. Some Realtek systems expose Stereo Mix only with a specific manufacturer-provided driver version; use an older package only when the PC or motherboard manufacturer supplies it.

When the fixes don’t work

If no input meter moves, test another microphone, cable, or audio jack to rule out failed hardware. A missing Stereo Mix entry can be a driver limitation, so WASAPI loopback or a virtual audio device is the practical fallback when the manufacturer doesn’t provide it.

Conclusion

Fix #2 usually solves a missing microphone or line input, while Fix #7 handles Stereo Mix when Windows has merely hidden it. If every input stays silent after a driver reinstall, the audio jack or chipset may have failed, and an external USB audio adapter is the cleaner fix.
