Paula Beaton is a freelance writer based in Scotland. She became a writer and editor in 2012 and has written widely across a range of industries, from travel and food to finance and fashion. Since 2019, she’s been focused on tech, writing for sites such as Android Central, Digital Trends, and Android Authority. Paula is also Android Authority’s resident copyeditor and creates the Weekly Authority newsletter, rounding up the week’s top tech news. When she’s not writing about tech, you’ll find her over at The Daily Meal waxing lyrical about food history and culture.
A self-confessed geek as a child, Paula spent every free moment (and every sunny day, much to the dismay of her parents) in front of her ZX Spectrum, gaming. She hasn’t changed much since, and now owns a collection of consoles, including a PS5, PS4, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch, plus an Oculus Quest 2. She still finds horror games in VR too terrifying to actually play.
Before working as a writer, Paula had a variety of different jobs, including working as a call handler for the police, serving refreshments onboard trains, and training as a nursery nurse. She has also edited more than 40 fiction and non-fiction books. This diverse background has helped her write about most topics with ease, not to mention providing some interesting memories and experiences.
When she’s not working, Paula can be found playing story-driven and indie games on her PS5 or Switch. She also loves film photography and spending time in the dark room. On sunny days, you’ll find her relaxing in an Edinburgh beer garden, exploring the countryside on a long walk, or heading for a new city to check out the pubs and restaurants.
Paula studied forensic science at university before realising chemistry (and science) completely confounded her. She later studied photography at college and has also completed several fiction editing courses since becoming a freelance writer and editor.
