Microsoft Edge sync is not working: a favorite you saved on one PC never shows up on the other, saved passwords won’t autofill, or extensions don’t follow you to a new laptop. The cause is usually a mismatched account or profile, a single sync toggle that got switched off, or a work/school policy, so start with Fix #1 and only reset sync if nothing else works.

How to Fix Microsoft Edge Sync Problems

These fixes run from least to most invasive. Fixes #1 through #5 don’t touch your data. Fix #7 deletes your synced data from Microsoft’s servers, so do Fix #6 (back up) first.

Fix #1: Confirm the Same Account and Profile on Every Device

Symptoms:

  • Nothing from your main PC shows up on your second PC
  • Favorites on one device look completely different from the other
  • Edge on one PC shows a different profile picture or name

Why it happens: Sync is tied to the Microsoft account signed in to a specific Edge profile. If one PC uses your personal account and the other uses a work account, or a separate local profile, each one keeps its own data. (Microsoft Support)

  • On the first PC, open Edge and click the profile picture in the top-right corner.
  • Note which account is listed. A Managed Account label typically indicates a work or school account is signed in.
Microsoft Edge profile menu open in the top-right corner, showing a demo account with Sync on and the Add new account option highlighted
  • Repeat on the second PC and compare the accounts.
  • If they don’t match, select Add new account on the mismatched PC and sign in with the correct Microsoft account.
  • Open the new profile and use it as your main profile on that PC.

If Edge keeps opening the wrong profile after you sort this out, see our guide Microsoft Edge Opens the Wrong Profile in Windows 11, which covers that problem in detail.

Verify: Add a test favorite on one PC. Then check the other PC after a minute or two.

Fix #2: Turn On the Sync Toggle for the Missing Data Type

Symptoms:

  • Favorites sync but passwords don’t, or the reverse
  • History syncs, but extensions never install on the other PC

Why it happens: Edge has a separate on/off switch for each data type: favorites, passwords, addresses and form fill, history, extensions, settings, open tabs, and more. One can be off while the rest stay on. (Microsoft Support)

  • In Edge, click Settings and more (the three dots) or press Alt + F.
  • Select Settings.
  • Go to Profiles, then select your profile under Your profile.
  • Select Sync. You can also try pasting edge://settings/profiles/sync into the address bar as a shortcut, though this internal address isn’t officially documented and may not work in every Edge version. If it doesn’t open the Sync page, use the menu path instead.
Microsoft Edge Profiles > Sync settings page listing data types with toggles, with Favorites, Passwords, and Extensions highlighted
  • Check each toggle one at a time. Turn on any switch that’s off for the data you’re missing.
  • Repeat on every PC. The toggles are set per device, so both ends need them on.

Extension still missing? Some extensions built for the discontinued Edge Legacy browser may not be compatible with the current Chromium-based Edge, though Microsoft doesn’t publish a specific compatibility list. Search for the extension in the Edge Add-ons store. If it isn’t listed, install a current replacement.

Verify: Save a test password or install a small extension on one PC, then check the other.

Fix #3: Check for a Work or School Policy Blocking Sync

Symptoms:

  • The sync toggles are greyed out or locked
  • Sync won’t turn on with a work or school account
  • The same account syncs at home but not on the office PC

Why it happens: Organizations can enable, restrict, or turn off Edge sync for work and school accounts through policy. Enterprise sync also requires an eligible Microsoft cloud subscription; not every subscription type or government cloud environment is supported. Check with your IT team or Microsoft’s enterprise sync documentation to confirm whether your organization’s plan qualifies. (Microsoft Learn: Configure enterprise sync)

  • Click your profile picture and check for the Managed Account label.
  • Optional: type edge://policy in the address bar to see which policies your organization has applied. This is an internal diagnostics page that isn’t formally documented by Microsoft, so treat it as an advanced check. Policy names can be hard to read, and you can’t change them here.
  • If sync is managed, contact your IT team. Ask whether Edge sync is allowed for your account and which data types are permitted.

You can’t override these settings locally on a managed PC, so don’t spend time toggling them. If your company blocks password sync but allows a third-party password manager, that can keep passwords available across devices instead.

Verify: Once IT confirms sync is allowed, recheck the toggles from Fix #2.

Fix #4: Diagnose Sync With edge://sync-internals

Symptoms:

  • The settings look correct, but you can’t tell whether sync is running
  • You need details to give to IT or Microsoft support

Why it happens: The normal Settings page shows toggles but not live status or error details. edge://sync-internals is an internal Edge page that shows sync status, the signed-in account, and any sync errors. Microsoft points to it for reporting sync problems. (Microsoft Edge for mobile FAQs)

  • Type edge://sync-internals into the address bar and press Enter.
  • Look at the summary section at the top. Confirm sync shows as active and the listed account is the one you expect.
The edge://sync-internals About page in Microsoft Edge on Windows 11, with the Summary showing sync running normally and account details redacted
  • Scan the page for anything flagged as an error or a disabled data type.
  • If the account is wrong, go back to Fix #1. If a data type shows as disabled, go back to Fix #2 or Fix #3.

The page is technical, and field names can change between Edge versions. You don’t need to understand every line. You’re looking for the right account, an active status, and any obvious errors.

Verify: Reload the page after making a change and confirm the status updated.

Fix #5: Resync Data to This Device

Symptoms:

  • Toggles are on and the account matches, but data is out of date
  • New items appear on one PC but never reach another

Why it happens: The local sync state on one PC can go stale even when everything is set up correctly. Resyncing pulls fresh data from the cloud without deleting anything there.

  • Open Settings > Profiles > select your profile > Sync.
  • Look for a resync option. Microsoft’s enterprise troubleshooting documentation calls it Re-sync data to this device. The exact wording in your build may differ. (Microsoft Learn: Troubleshoot enterprise sync)
  • Select it and wait a few minutes.
  • If you don’t see a resync option, sign out of the profile, close Edge, reopen it, and sign back in.

Verify: Check whether your missing favorites or passwords appear.

Fix #6: Back Up Your Favorites and Passwords

Do this before Fix #7. Resetting sync clears the data stored on Microsoft’s servers. If your only copy of a password or favorite lives in the cloud, a reset can wipe it. (Microsoft: Back up passwords and favorites)

Export favorites:

  • Press Ctrl + Shift + O to open Favorites.
  • Select More options (the three dots).
  • Choose Export favorites and save the HTML file. Menu wording can vary slightly between builds.

Export passwords:

  • Go to Settings > Profiles > Passwords (the exact path can vary slightly between Edge versions; if you don’t see it there, search ā€œpasswordsā€ in the Settings search box).
  • Select the three dots next to Passwords.
  • Choose Export passwords. Edge may ask you to confirm with your Windows PIN or password.
  • Save the file.

Treat the exported password file like any sensitive document, since it contains your saved credentials. Copy both files to a USB flash drive or other offline storage, then delete the password file from your Downloads folder once you no longer need it.

Verify: Open the favorites HTML file in Edge to confirm it contains your bookmarks.

Fix #7: Reset Sync

Symptoms:

  • Data is duplicated, missing, or wrong across all devices
  • Fixes #1–#5 didn’t change anything

Why it happens: The synced data on Microsoft’s servers can get into a bad state. Reset sync clears that cloud data and lets your devices start over, but it’s destructive: it does not merge your existing devices’ data or guarantee that any one device’s copy survives. (Microsoft Learn: Configure enterprise sync)

Because of that, treat the reset as a multi-device procedure, not a single click on one PC. Disable sync elsewhere first, reset from one device, then bring the rest back online deliberately.

  • Confirm you finished Fix #6.
  • On every other device signed into this account, turn off sync entirely, or turn off sync for the specific data types you’re resetting. This stops those devices from re-uploading the same problem data once you turn sync back on.
  • On the one device you want to reset from, open Settings > Profiles > select your profile > Sync.
  • Look for Still having sync problems? Try another option or Reset sync data from Microsoft servers. Labels can differ between personal and work accounts.
  • Select Reset sync.
Microsoft Edge Reset sync confirmation dialog warning that sync data will be deleted from Microsoft servers, with the Reset button
  • Read the warning, then confirm. Keep Edge open on this device until the reset finishes; closing it partway through can leave the process in an unclear state.
  • Once the reset completes, turn sync back on for this device and sign in again if prompted. Whatever local data this device has will start populating the now-cleared cloud storage.
  • Go to your other devices one at a time, sign in again, and turn sync back on for each. Resuming sync on a device lets its local data sync again, so bring devices back deliberately rather than reconnecting everything at once.

Verify: Add a test favorite on the reset device and check that it appears on the others after you re-enable sync there. If anything is missing, import your backup from Fix #6.

Fix #8: Repair Microsoft Edge From Windows Settings

Symptoms:

  • Sync still fails after all the steps above
  • Edge also crashes or behaves oddly in other ways

Why it happens: A damaged Edge installation can occasionally interfere with sync. Repair is a standard Windows app-repair step that typically reinstalls an app’s program files without a full uninstall. Microsoft’s support documentation doesn’t detail exactly how this applies to Edge specifically, so back up first anyway.

  • Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps (on Windows 10: Settings > Apps > Apps & features).
  • Find Microsoft Edge.
  • On Windows 11, click the three dots next to it and select Modify. On Windows 10, select it and click Modify.
Windows 11 Settings > Apps > Installed apps with the Microsoft Edge Modify option and the Repair Microsoft Edge prompt
  • Approve the User Account Control prompt.
  • Click Repair and keep the PC online until it finishes.
  • Reopen Edge and check sync status at edge://sync-internals.

Verify: Repeat the test from Fix #1.

What Edge Sync Messages and Labels Mean

Edge doesn’t appear to use one standard, documented sync error code — Microsoft’s troubleshooting guidance instead describes states and labels. These are the labels and states you’re most likely to see:

Getting More Help

  • Collect details first: Screenshot the summary at the top of edge://sync-internals and note which data types fail. Blur your email address before sharing.
  • Work or school PC: Send that screenshot and the output of edge://policy to your IT team. Admins can use Microsoft’s enterprise sync troubleshooting guide.
  • Personal account: Start with Microsoft’s sync settings support page, then contact Microsoft Support through your Microsoft account.
  • Check the release notes: If sync broke right after an update, check the Edge Stable channel release notes for known issues.

Prevention Tips

  • Use one profile per account: Keep personal and work accounts in separate, clearly named Edge profiles so data doesn’t cross over.
  • Check toggles on new PCs: Open the Sync page right after signing in on any new device.
  • Export regularly: Export favorites and passwords every few months and keep the files offline.
  • Keep Edge updated: Edge updates itself automatically in most default configurations, though IT policy can change this on managed devices. Glance at Settings > About Microsoft Edge if sync acts up after a long time offline.
  • Don’t reset first: Work through the fixes in order so you don’t wipe cloud data you didn’t need to.
Help & Answers

Frequently Asked Questions

2 questions

Will resetting sync delete my favorites and passwords?

It clears the synced copy on Microsoft’s servers. Export your favorites and passwords first (Fix #6) so you can restore anything that doesn’t come back.

Why does sync work at home but not on my work computer?

Your organization controls sync for work and school accounts. It may be turned off, limited to certain data types, or unavailable on your company’s subscription. Only IT can change that.

Wrapping Up

Fixes #1 and #2 solve most Edge sync problems, because a mismatched account or a single switched-off toggle is far more common than broken sync. Reset sync is a real fix, but only after you’ve backed up. If sync breaks again soon after a repair, and Edge also crashes or shows settings you didn’t change, scan for malware and check whether an unexpected policy appears in edge://policy.
