Your Microsoft Teams notifications have stopped working in Windows 11: no banners, no sound, just unread badges you only notice hours later. Start by checking three places: Windows 11’s notification settings, Teams’ own notification settings, or a policy your IT department controls.

Quick Diagnosis: Is It Windows, Teams, or IT?

  • No Teams alerts at all, even for direct messages? Windows settings are one place to check. Start with Fixes #1 through #3.
  • Unread counts appear, but there’s never a banner or sound? Check Teams settings as well as Windows. See Fixes #4 and #5.
  • Some chats alert and others don’t? A muted chat or channel is one possibility. Go to Fix #6.
  • It broke right after an update? Go to Fixes #7 through #9.
  • On a work laptop, an option is grayed out, missing, or keeps changing back? Your organization may enforce a notification policy you can’t override. Skip ahead to “Work and School Accounts” below.

Symptoms and Settings to Check

Teams doesn’t usually show an error message when notifications fail. The alerts just stop arriving. Use this table to match what you’re seeing to a fix.

The 9 Fixes

Fix #1: Fully Restart Teams

Closing the Teams window doesn’t always quit the app.

In some cases, it can keep running in the background in an unstable state, though Microsoft doesn’t specifically document this behavior for the current Teams app.

  • Look for the Teams icon in the notification area at the right end of the taskbar. Click the up arrow (^) if you don’t see it.
  • Right-click the Teams icon and choose Quit.
  • Reopen Microsoft Teams from the Start menu.
  • Ask a coworker or family member to send you a test chat message.

Fix #2: Turn On Teams Notifications in Windows 11

Windows has its own on/off switch for every app. When it’s off, Teams can’t show a banner no matter what you set inside Teams.

  • Open Settings > System > Notifications.
  • Make sure the main Notifications toggle at the top is on.
  • Scroll down the app list to Microsoft Teams and turn its toggle on.
Windows 11 Settings > System > Notifications page scrolled to the app list, with the Microsoft Teams entry and its on/off toggle highlighted
  • Click the Microsoft Teams entry to expand its options.
  • Turn on notification banners, notifications in the notification center, and the option to play a sound.
Windows 11 Settings > System > Notifications > Microsoft Teams detail page showing the banner, notification center, and sound options highlighted

If banners appear but you hear nothing, check where Windows is sending audio. A connected USB headset or Bluetooth earbuds may be playing the alert sound while you’re listening for it on your speakers.

Fix #3: Turn Off Do Not Disturb and End Any Focus Session

This is a common reason notifications “just stop.” Do not disturb can switch on automatically on a schedule, or start whenever you begin a Focus session.

  • Open Settings > System > Notifications.
  • Turn off Do not disturb.
  • Expand the automatic Do not disturb rules below it. Check whether a schedule, or a condition like duplicating your display or playing a game, is turning it on.
  • Review the priority notifications setting. If Do not disturb has to stay on, add Microsoft Teams as a priority app so its alerts still come through.
  • Open Settings > System > Focus.
  • If a session is running, click Stop focus session.
Windows 11 Settings > System > Focus page showing the Focus session controls, with the session toggle and schedule area highlighted

Fix #4: Turn Off Teams’ “Mute All Notifications” Setting

Teams has a documented control called Mute all notifications (except for calls and meetings), found under its Notifications and activity settings. This Windows-only control mutes Teams notifications except for calls and meetings. The effect on individual notification types can also depend on your other Teams settings.

Check this setting even if you do not remember changing it.

  • In Teams, click Settings and more (…) next to your profile picture.
  • Select Settings > Notifications and activity.
  • Scroll to the General section.
  • Turn off Mute all notifications (except for calls and meetings).

Wording for this setting can vary slightly between Teams versions and account types, but it should appear in the same General area of Notifications and activity.

Fix #5: Set Teams to Show Banners for Chats, Mentions, and Reactions

Some notification types can appear only in Activity rather than as banners. Available destinations depend on the notification type and your Teams account.

  • In Teams, click Settings and more (…) next to your profile picture.
  • Select Settings > Notifications and activity.
  • Find the Chats and channels section.
  • For chat messages, @mentions, and likes and reactions, choose the option that includes a banner rather than the Activity-only option. The exact wording varies by Teams version and account type.

After changing settings, use Test notification in Teams to check an example alert and sound. Available controls can differ by version and account type.

Fix #6: Unmute Individual Chats and Channels

If only one conversation is silent, check whether it is muted. Muting affects just that thread, so the rest of Teams keeps alerting normally.

  • In the Teams Chat list, find the silent conversation. A muted chat usually shows a mute icon.
  • Click More options (…) next to it.
  • Choose Unmute.

  • For a channel in a work or school team, click More options (…) next to the channel. Open its channel notification settings and turn alerts back on.

Fix #7: Update Teams and Windows 11

Check for available Teams and Windows updates before investigating a persistent client problem. Updating is a maintenance step, not proof that a specific notification fix exists.

  • In Teams, click Settings and more (…) and select Check for updates if it appears.
  • Quit and reopen Teams after it updates (see Fix #1).
  • Open Settings > Windows Update and click Check for updates.
  • Install everything available, then restart your PC.

Microsoft’s Teams version history page tracks release versions. There’s no single build number every Windows user should match, so just install whatever update Teams and Windows offer you.

Fix #8: Repair the Teams App

Repair is a standard Windows 11 app tool.

Try Repair if Windows offers it for your installed Teams package. Read the displayed explanation before proceeding; do not assume every package preserves all local state or sign-in details.

  • Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
  • Type Teams in the search box.
  • Click More options (…) next to Microsoft Teams and select Advanced options.
  • Scroll to the Reset section and click Repair.
Windows 11 Settings > Apps > Installed apps > Microsoft Teams > Advanced options page with the Repair and Reset buttons highlighted
  • Wait for the checkmark to appear, then open Teams and test.

Fix #9: Preserve Diagnostic Logs Before Reset or Reinstall

Microsoft’s current Teams cache guidance explicitly advises against clearing the cache for incorrect notifications or unread counts. It says doing so does not fix those issues and deletes diagnostic logs needed to investigate them.

For a notification-only problem, stop here rather than resetting or deleting folders. Record the symptoms and the settings you checked, then contact your administrator or Microsoft support. If Teams also fails to launch, use the separate Teams-not-opening troubleshooting guide for that different symptom.

For reference only, Microsoft documents the new Teams cache at %userprofile%\appdata\local\Packages\MSTeams_8wekyb3d8bbwe\LocalCache\Microsoft\MSTeams, but that is not a recommendation to delete it for notification problems. Its Reset method deletes app data, including personalization settings. Do not assume unsent work or local preferences will survive.

For notification-only problems, reinstall is deliberately deferred to support. If support recommends reinstalling for a separately diagnosed client problem, save your work and follow its instructions. Avoid experimenting with cache deletion, Reset, and reinstall in succession: preserving the evidence is more useful for this symptom.

Work and School Accounts vs. Personal Accounts

Microsoft documents notification troubleshooting separately for Teams for personal use and for work or school accounts. Many of the same concepts apply across both, such as Windows-level notification toggles and Focus settings, though exact options and behavior can differ by account type.

The difference is control. On a managed work or school PC, IT administrators can set organization-wide Teams notification policies, and some Windows settings may be locked as well.

If an option is grayed out, missing, or reverts after you change it, stop troubleshooting and send your IT or Teams admin a short note describing what you tried.

Getting Help

  • Gather details first: Note your Windows version from Settings > System > About, which fixes you’ve tried, and whether the problem affects all chats or only some.
  • Personal accounts: Start with Microsoft’s Teams for personal use notification troubleshooting article, retrieved October 28, 2026.
  • Work or school accounts: Contact your IT help desk. They can see policies you can’t.

Prevention Tips

  • Check Focus before you assume something broke: A Focus session or Do not disturb schedule can suppress alerts.
  • Use Focus instead of muting for short breaks: A Windows Focus session provides a timed quiet period; automatic Do not disturb schedules are separate settings. Muting a chat, by contrast, stays off until you manually turn it back on.
  • Keep Teams and Windows updated: Install updates regularly so you get Microsoft’s notification fixes.
  • Check your audio output: If you switch between a docking station, external speakers, and a headset, make sure Windows’ default output is the device you’re actually listening to.
Help & Answers

Frequently Asked Questions

5 questions

Why did Teams notifications stop with no setting change I remember making?

Check whether an automatic setting is active. Settings to inspect include a Windows Do not disturb schedule, a Focus session, Teams’ mute-all-notifications setting, or an update that changed app state. Fixes #3, #4, and #7 cover these.

Is this a Windows problem or a Teams problem?

If nothing alerts, check Windows first (Fixes #2–#3). If badges update but banners don’t appear, check Teams settings too (Fixes #4–#6).

Why do I get notifications for some chats but not others?

Those chats or channels are individually muted, or their channel notification settings are turned down. See Fix #6.

What if I can’t change a notification setting on my work laptop?

Your organization likely controls it through policy. Contact IT rather than repeating the fixes.

What’s the difference between Repair and Reset?

Repair and Reset are different Windows app controls. Read the explanation Windows shows for your installed package before choosing either. Microsoft says Reset deletes Teams app data, including personalization settings; its cache guide advises against clearing the cache for notification and unread-count issues.

Wrapping Up

Start with the Windows and Teams notification settings, then test after each change. A disabled toggle or Do not disturb schedule is worth checking, but it does not explain every case.

If the settings checks do not help, preserve the diagnostic logs and ask support or your IT team to investigate. Include whether other apps are affected and which checks you completed.
