On October 28, 2026, Microsoft released Windows 11 KB5127936, an optional preview for versions 25H2 and 26H2. It adds a File Explorer context menu that rolls out gradually and Cloud rebuild recovery. If your PC runs well, wait unless Microsoft’s listed fixes address a problem you have.

What Happened

Microsoft’s KB5127936 release notes list OS builds 26200.9818 for 25H2 and 26300.9818 for 26H2. This particular preview is not listed for 24H2; that is not a statement about all updates for that version.

Microsoft says the new File Explorer right-click menu opens faster and has less clutter. You can also choose which commands and app extensions appear. We have not independently benchmarked that speed claim, but the controls could help if installed apps have crowded your menu.

The menu is rolling out gradually. You may see KB5127936 in Windows Update before you get the new controls. Microsoft’s English release notes say to right-click and select Customize menu once the feature arrives. Its settings let you choose commands, app extensions, and layout. These are documented steps, not our own hands-on test.

Microsoft’s release notes describe Cloud rebuild as a recovery option. It can download a Windows image and drivers through Windows Update, including when a PC can’t start normally. The notes also say Windows Recovery Environment can reuse eligible saved Wi-Fi profiles. Availability is phased.

Cloud rebuild is a destructive reinstall that removes local files, rather than an in-place repair that preserves them. Back up all important files and plan for restoring accounts, apps, and settings before using it. Choosing drive sanitization makes the erasure irreversible. Check the recovery options on your PC before relying on Cloud rebuild. It needs network access to download files. As a recovery precaution, keep the PC plugged in and do not interrupt the rebuild.

How It Stacks Up

The menu changes affect everyday File Explorer use. Cloud rebuild matters when Windows needs recovery. Microsoft provides no independent benchmark comparison here, so these features alone do not establish better speed or reliability for your PC.

This is an optional non-security preview, rather than a reason for every stable PC to update immediately. Waiting makes sense for a stable PC. If Microsoft’s release notes list a fix for your problem, installing it has a clear purpose.

Microsoft’s Windows 11 release information and 25H2 resolved-issues page document a Remote Desktop Connection failure affecting non-admin users connecting to devices with Administrator protection enabled. Microsoft says it primarily affects enterprise-managed devices acting as Remote Desktop hosts. Connections fail with error 0xC000000D. Both pages list KB5127936 as the fix, giving affected users a concrete reason to consider the preview.

These pages track reported issues rather than proving an absence of problems, so they can’t rule out a new issue surfacing later. A USB Audio Class 1.0 issue reported after an earlier September 2026 security update hasn’t been linked to KB5127936.

The Reaction

There’s no clear pattern of user reaction yet. Without attributable user reports to cite, we cannot claim users broadly like the menu or that this preview is broadly breaking PCs.

Our Take

Verdict: Wait on a stable PC; install for a specific listed fix. Choosing which commands and app extensions appear could make a crowded menu easier to use. Microsoft’s speed claim has no independent timing here, and the menu controls may arrive after you install the preview.

To check your version, open Settings > System > About. If you run Windows 11 25H2 or 26H2 and a listed KB5127936 fix matters to you — such as the Remote Desktop error affecting non-admin users with Administrator protection enabled — look for the optional preview under Settings > Windows Update.

Otherwise, wait for a regular update. If your PC won’t start, count on Cloud rebuild only if it appears in that PC’s recovery environment.

Wrapping Up

KB5127936 is worth considering when it fixes a problem you have. If your PC works well, you can wait: the menu’s speed gain hasn’t been independently measured here, and installing the preview doesn’t guarantee immediate access to its controls.
